Pakistan is banking on mobile money to advance female digital inclusion

Lahore, Pakistan

Financial crisis

Globally there are 1.7 billion adults in the world who do not have a bank account. Pakistan makes up about 6% of this figure, and of the estimated 100 million unbanked people in Pakistan, the majority are women. In fact, approximately 93% of all Pakistani females do not have bank accounts.

Digital hope

Despite these alarming figures, a glimmer of hope existed due to the fact that 10% of all unbanked adults do have online access, either through a smartphone or computer. Mobile operator Jazz, part of the Veon Group, recognized this opportunity and in 2016 launched JazzCash, a mobile money service that has since played a key role in promoting female digital inclusion in Pakistan.
