Kawangware, Kenya

40% of Kenyans can’t afford to seek treatment from hospitals when they need it, and it’s often those who need it most that have to choose between putting food on their table or paying for medical care.

#CaseForChange has sent Janet Mbungua (@officialjanetmbungua) to Kawangware, a slum near Nairobi, where most people live on less than 5 dollars a day. A lack of access to financial planning tools and saving services means they are often unable to cover unexpected medical costs. However, now the mobile health wallet service M-TIBA is helping people like Irene to save for her baby’s hospital visits.

Making its way around the world, the Case For Change is packed with everything people need to tell their stories on what mobile operators globally are doing to tackle the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The result of a ground-breaking collaboration between Safaricom, CarePay and PharmAccess, M-TIBA contributes to SDGs 3, 8, 9 and 10 by helping millions of Kenyans take control of their finances and start saving towards proper medical
