What if mobile tech gave you the power of sight?

Boston, USA

It’s amazing to see what connectivity can do to change peoples’ lives, so we’ve kicked off the Case for Change campaign by having travel blogger David Hoffman (@davidsbeenhere) head to Boston to meet Erich.

After finishing college, Erich put on some weight and looked to take up running as a way to stay fit and healthy. Most of us have been there, but Erich had another major challenge – he’s blind. Still, with unrelenting dedication, months of training, and innovative mobile technology, he was able to smash the Boston Marathon.

Erich’s form of blindness is known as low vision. Using the Aira app over AT&T’s mobile network, Erich can connect with a remote operator who guides him through anything from buying a suitable greeting card to running 26.2 miles. It’s like having a personal assistant with him at all times, with the uses for Aira simply “too numerous to mention”.

Making its way around the world, the Case for Change is packed with everything people need to tell their stories on what mobile operators globally are doing to tackle the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). AT&T are contributing to SDGs 3, 9 and 10 by prioritising data traffic for users of the Aira app, especially in times of network congestion, to provide a more predictable experience.
