Giving a voice to Syrian refugees in Turkey

Istanbul, Turkey

The Syrian conflict unleashed one of the worst humanitarian crises the World has ever seen, with more than 3 million Syrian refugees seeking shelter in neighbouring country Turkey.

Sadly, the situation isn’t proving to be as temporary as initially hoped. Almost 50% of the Syrian refugees in Turkey believe they’ll be making a home there for the next 5 years, and over 500,000 children remain out of education. One of the main challenges for integrating into their new communities is now overcoming the language barrier.

Asli (@aslitkizmaz) and Ilker (@ilkerkizmaz)are in Istanbul to meet up with Bana Alabed, an 8-year-old Syrian refugee who tweeted messages of hope as she fled from Aleppo and the destruction of the Syrian war. She is now settling into life in Turkey, having gained her citizenship this year, and actively learning Turkish to better integrate with her new community.

Having a channel of communication with the world gave Bana hope, despite tragic circumstances, and now mobile technology continues to empower her, and thousands of other children, to make new homes.

Making its way around the world, the Case For Change is packed with everything people need to tell their stories on what mobile operators globally are doing to tackle the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Turkcell’s work to help facilitate integration with its Hello Hope app, which now has over 600,000 users, incorporates goals 4, 10 and 16.
