Empowering Indian women so a nation can thrive

Kabatabandh, Odisha , India

In India, there is still a clear gender gap. It begins with many families failing to invest in the education of girls, which leads to lower levels of literacy and less financial autonomy – further enhancing the inequalities. It comes as no surprise that women are less likely to own a mobile phone.

This incredibly complex issue stems from both cultural and social norms that have existed for centuries, disconnecting women from society across India. However, through the power of mobile connectivity, this is beginning to change for good – and by increasing both the economic and social status of women, it’s proven that a nation can prosper.

Cherry travels to Kabatabandha in Odisha where she learns what Airtel is doing to help. Whilst on this journey, Cherry meets with Rajalaxmi who is one of the first women in her village to benefit from the Airtel Payments Bank initiative. Cherry learns how this technology has allowed Rajalaxmi to become more financially independent.

Along with Airtel’s banking initiative, Cherry sits down with Snehalata, a small business owner in Kabatabandha, who uses her mobile to grow her business through Airtel’s 4G network.

And finally, Cherry meets Gayatri and her daughter Sonu, who, through the power of 4G, is accessing a world of learning tools that would’ve been impossible just a few years ago.

Making its way around the world, the Case For Change is packed with everything people need to tell their stories on what mobile operators globally are doing to tackle the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Airtel’s work in India contributes to SDGs 5 and 8 by helping to close the gender gap.
