Bringing stability and independence to Syrian refugees in Jordan

Manja, Jordan

In 2015, 65 million people were forcibly displaced from their homes and countries – the highest it’s been in decades. Today there are still 21 million refugees around the world who have yet to establish a foundation for themselves and their families – living without identity, access to jobs or an education.

For many refugees, being connected can literally mean the difference between life and death, and for many Syrian refugees in Jordan, mobile connectivity is helping to bring a sense of normality, pride and independence.

Yara Yehia (@yarastravels) travels to Jordan to meet with Mousa, who fled Syria during the war and has since established a life for his family in Jordan. Yara learns that since fleeing his hometown, Mousa has been able to not only stay connected with his fellow refugees but also establish some financial independence through Zain’s financial initiative, Zain Cash, which allows Syrian refugees to access mobile financial services with their UNHCR certificate, in the absence of any Government-issued identification document.

From helping families reunite with loved ones to gaining financial independence, Zain has provided thousands of Syrian refugees with a second chance in life. Through vast change and tragedy, mobile technology continues to develop solutions, foundations and hope for many families like Mousa’s who are fighting to rebuild their lives.

Making its way around the world, the Case For Change is packed with everything people need to tell their stories on what mobile operators globally are doing to tackle the UN 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Zain’s work in Jordan contributes to 8, 10, and 16 by helping families stay connected and gain financial independence as they rebuild their lives.
