What are the
Sustainable Development Goals?

Created in 2016, the aim of the United Nations 17 SDGs is to transform our world by 2030, a mission to end all forms of poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change while ensuring that no one is left behind.

The mobile industry is committed to accelerating the achievement of these goals with the power of mobile technology.

“Mobile technology is having an impact across all 17 SDGs and is increasing its contribution.”

– Amina J Mohammed Deputy Secretary-General United Nations

Goal 10

Reduced Inequalities

The mobile industry is striving to achieve social, political and economic inclusion for all. Whilst more than 60% of households in developing countries do not have internet access, 3G coverage in developing countries is now at 83%, offering the transformative benefits of mobile internet access for the poorest populations.

Goal 3

Good Health

Mobile can increase the quality, reduce the cost and extend the reach of healthcare to benefit millions through an abundance of tools, services and initiatives across the developed and developing world.

Goal 4

Quality Education

Mobile is transforming the way people learn. In remote and underserved areas where 90% of households do not have internet access, mobile can connect teachers and students to educational tools, information and opportunities.

Goal 5

Gender Equality

When women thrive, so do families, societies and economies. 184m fewer women than men own mobile phones in low and middle-income countries. The mobile industry is working to close this gender gap and deliver socio-economic benefits to women such as increased access to financial, health, education and employment services.

Goal 13

Climate Action

Mobile technology is having a significant impact on the causes and effects of climate change. As well as delivering valuable data to minimise damage from extreme weather events and providing extensive disaster relief and recovery, mobile has the potential to reduce greenhouse gases in other sectors - including transportation, buildings and electrical utilities - by about five times its own carbon footprint.
